Central Square Congregational Church

We are a Christian Community of people who are reaching out to our neighbors, at home and abroad, sharing our faith and our resources.

New Mission Site Chosen for 2006 Mission Trip….

Remote Eastern North Carolina

June 24- July 1, 2006

Who can go?

Youth who are currently in the ninth grade through current seniors may go. Youth must be church members or active church participants. Friends or non-church youth are welcome if they have already been involved in Youth Group for at least a year.

Advisors: Mark Sorgman (his sixth trip) and Donna O’Neil (her third) and one more adult TBA.

Transportation: We will rent two 15 passenger vans and drive. It’s about an 11 hour drive (not including stops)

Lodging: A local church or community center. Youth are separated by gender and sleep on the floor on air mattresses.

Site, Service and Activities: Hyde County is extremely poor (14% unemployment, $13,162 per capita income) and very remote. Swamplands dominate this remote, rural, low lying county. Youth will spend two days working with local children at “Kids Club” and two days doing home repair and painting. Some of the home repair work is to repair damage from Hurricane Isabelle. Evening activities may include “crabbing,” canoeing, community cookout, and Youth Works Olympics. Every day ends with “club time” a time of praise music, worship and discussion.

Cost? Youth Works charges us $258 per person. To that we add the cost of van rentals, gas, food along the way, expenses or fees, and the cost of the three adult leaders. If the kids work hard at fundraising, I feel very confident assuring you that the cost will be no more than $200 incl. deposit. So far the kids have never paid more than $100 incl. deposit.

To learn more about the trip including our expectations of both youth and parents, please attend a meeting after church from - in the Youth Room on Sunday, September 25. Youth who want to go must attend this meeting with a parent even if you have gone on a mission trip before as some of our policies and expectations (including financial expectations) will be changing. If you cannot attend, you must contact Rev. Sheri or a trip leader in advance of this meeting.

For more information about Youth Works and this year’s mission site, check out www.Youthworks.com. They list our site as “Costal Carolina.”
