June 23, our Mission Youth travel to Pennsylvania for a week-long hands-on mission focused experience, bringing a little bit of our community of faith to ...
Historic Philadelphia – FISHTOWN - the Seed of the Nation.
On the banks of the Delaware River, directly northeast of center city Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, you'll discover a little and radiant neighborhood referred to as FISHTOWN. This unique and energetic Fishtown neighborhood is full of history, arts and culture. It is also home to the monumental place where William Penn and the Lenape Indians made the Treaty of Amity and Friendship in 1682 known as Penn's Treaty.
The name "Fishtown" is derived from the area's former role as the center of the shad fishing industry on the Delaware River. The name comes from the fact that a number of 18th and early 19th centuries German and German-American families bought up the fishing rights on both sides of the Delaware River from Trenton Falls down to Cape May, New Jersey. Also, in the early 18th century, an English colonist was fabled to have caught the largest shad in the world in the Delaware River.
Our Mission Youth will serve at the YouthWorks site located in the community of Fishtown and will spend their service time working on projects. These projects may include painting houses, yard work, minor home repair, gardening and any other needed projects that will be determined once we arrive.
